Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The term ‘glaucoma’ refers to a complex range of processes resulting in damage to the optic nerve – the nerve that connects the eye to the brain and allows us to see. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are vital to prevent progression. As the major referral centre for Victoria, our unit manages both acute and aggressive glaucoma as well as chronic and stable conditions. Investigations involve visual field testing and various scans of the eye and optic nerve. During your appointment, we may discuss a variety treatment options in the form of eye drops, laser or surgery.
