Our Vision
About research at the Eye and Ear
A critical factor in our research success is the strength of the relationships we have with our research partners, namely
- Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA)
- Cerulea Clinical Trials
- University of Melbourne Departments of Otolaryngology, Audiology and Speech Pathology and, Optometry and Vision Sciences
- HEARNet, and
- Bionics Institute
Our research projects cover all types of clinical research, population research and health services research, including clinical trials testing medicinal products and medical devices for the first time in humans.

Research - ethical approval and site governance authorisation
The Eye and Ear Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is registered with the National Health and Medical Research Committee NHMRC and operates in compliance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023). We also accept HREC approval by National Mutual Acceptance (NMA) HRECs for streamlined ethical review of multi-site research studies.
With the separation of ethical approval and site governance authorisation, research conducted at the Hospital must hold both HREC approval and governance authorisation. We are assessed for compliance against the Eye and Ear Clinical Trials Governance Framework under hospital accreditation.
