The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (Eye and Ear) is Australia’s only specialty hospital providing state-wide eye, ear, nose and throat healthcare since it was founded in 1863. In 2023 the hospital treated approximately 58,000 unique patients from throughout Victoria and interstate. Each of these patients is a potential research participant.
The Eye and Ear has important research partnerships with:
- Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA)
- Cerulea Clinical Trials (wholly owned subsidiary of CERA)
- HEARnet Limited
- The Departments of Otolaryngology, and Audiology and Speech Pathology at the University of Melbourne, and others.
The campus environment offers excellent collaborative opportunities and fosters high quality research and researchers.
The Eye and Ear is located centrally on the edge of the Melbourne central business district, in modern surroundings with state-of-the-art facilities including those operated by our research partner organisations, enabling cutting-edge research.
A recent development is the opening of Cerulea Clinical Trials which is a purpose-built clinical trials area for conducting high quality ophthalmology clinical trials staffed by dedicated research professionals experienced in conducting clinical trials across all phases.
HEARnet Clinical Studies Network is our research partner for ear and hearing trials and is a key element of the University of Melbourne Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology’s industry-engaged research program. Through its highly skilled clinical studies team of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and clinical trials specialists, HEARnet conducts a range of industry-sponsored studies to develop new technology, speech processing, and rehabilitation tools and procedures.
