Biography

Dr Rahul Chakrabarti is a Melbourne trained general ophthalmologist who completed his medical training at Monash University, and ophthalmology training at the Eye and Ear. He is the current Director of Ophthalmology Training for Victoria. Dr Chakrabarti has additional sub-specialty training in adult and pediatric strabismus, and neuro-ophthalmology having completed fellowships at the Eye and Ear and Alfred Hospitals.

Dr Chakrabarti has a special interest in ophthalmic surgical education and is involved in virtual reality cataract surgery simulation training of eye registrars.

He holds consultant positions at the Eye and Ear’s Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Ocular Diagnostic Unit, The Alfred Hospital, Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology at Monash University, Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology, The University of Melbourne.

Current research interests include surgical education research, ocular trauma, neuro-ophthalmology and electrodiagnostic.

Awards

2022 – RANZCO Best Oral Presentation- 20 year outcomes of optic nerve sheath fenestration.

2021 – Finalist in Medical Educator of the Year Award, Epworth Hospital Network Clinical School, East Melbourne.

2019 – Noel and Imelda Foster Medal, The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. For best registrar or fellow of The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2018.

2019 – Jim Martin Best Poster Prize. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists Annual Scientific Congress, Sydney, 2019.

2018 – Ophthalmic Research Institute of Australia (ORIA) Best Poster Recipient for Implementation of an adapted surgical assessment rubric for novice cataract surgeons. Poster presentation at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists Congress, Adelaide, November 18-21, 2018

2013 – James McBride-White Medal, Victorian Ophthalmic Alumni Meeting, 2013 For presentation on diabetic retinopathy research for the World Health Organization
