In partnership with the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), the Eye and Ear recently hosted a distinguished multi-disciplinary ocular oncology event. The inaugural Ocular Oncology Research Day marked an important professional collaboration across Australia and New Zealand. This event brought together leading radiation physicists, radiation oncologists, ophthalmologists, and medical oncologists from across Australia and New Zealand, as well as Professor Melvin Astrahan—a globally recognised authority on radiation planning from the United States.

With over 40 participants representing a number of major ocular oncology centres across the region, the day was dedicated to fostering innovation, sharing research, and building partnerships to advance the treatment of ocular cancers. The program featured cutting-edge presentations, including sessions on hyperspectral retinal imaging and rapid dosimetry for ophthalmic plaque brachytherapy.

A highlight of the event was the keynote address by Professor Astrahan, a distinguished medical physicist and CEO of Eye Physics, LLC. Professor Astrahan’s pioneering work in 3D treatment simulation and brachytherapy devices has transformed clinical outcomes for patients with ocular tumours.

The collaborative approach championed at the Eye and Ear, which sees multidisciplinary teams working closely together, was showcased as a model for improving patient outcomes and driving research excellence.

We thank all presenters, attendees, and partners for making this event a resounding success. Together, we are raising the profile of ocular oncology research and paving the way for future breakthroughs.
