We are excited to announce the official opening of our newly redeveloped hospital!
The Hon. Mary-Anne Thomas, Minister for Health, Infrastructure and Ambulance Services, officially opened the hospital on Tuesday 23 May.
The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital is Australia’s only specialist eye and ear hospital, and for over 160 years, we’ve been at the forefront of specialist care, education, research and innovation.
Our new state of the art hospital benefits patients, staff and visitors with new facilities and bright open spaces. We extend our gratitude to the Australian Government, Victorian Department of Health and the Victorian Health Building Authority for their collaboration and support throughout this transformative journey.

The new light filled ED creates a warm and calming atmosphere that is accessible 24/7. It is easily accessible with drop-off and pick-up zones located right outside on Morrison Place.
Our new Emergency Department Short Stay Unit aligns the hospital with the State’s vision for Victorian Emergency Departments. It’s four 24 hours beds allows us to offer designated care for patients who require short-term treatment or monitoring.
Acute Ophthalmology Service (AOS)
Many of our ED patients require follow up eye care and are seen in our AOS clinic. This is now located on the ground floor in close proximity to our Emergency Department. The co-location of these services facilitates seamless coordination and collaboration between teams, resulting in improved patient care and streamlined treatment for individuals.
Eye, ear, nose and throat clinics
There are over 90 specialist eye and ear, nose and throat clinics located on Level 1. Patients can now benefit from all the clinics being together on one floor rather than having to navigate multiple floors. Eye Clinics are accessible by the main staircase or green lifts and our Ear, Nose, Throat, Audiology and Balance clinics can also be accessed by the main staircase or the blue lifts.
Surgical Admissions and Recovery
Patients attending the hospital for day surgery arrive on Level 2 via the green lifts to our surgical admissions and recovery area. Located on the same floor, this co-location provides improved orientation and ease of access for patients.
Inpatient Ward
Should patient require an overnight stay they are taken to our Inpatient Ward on Level 4. The ward can be accessed by the blue lifts and offers a fresh and bright environment, designed to provide a comfortable and healing atmosphere. The redesigned layout promotes ease of access and improved patient flow, enhancing the overall quality of care we provide.

Simulation Centre: This facility boasts both the Virtual Simulation Room, which trains medical staff in surgical techniques using simulators, and the Clinical Simulation Room, designed for delivering practical and theoretical skills training through simulated scenarios.
