Practical Emergency Eye and ENT Skills Workshops

Doctors and Nurse Practitioners working in an Emergency Department need to have a high level of skill in assessing and diagnosing ENT and eye presentations. In these workshops there will be small group instruction and demonstration by Specialists. The sessions will be hands on and will be very instructive in a supportive environment.

We offer workshops to the following groups:

  • Emergency Physicians (FACEMs)
  • Emergency Trainees
  • Nurse Practitioners

The workshops include practical skills including:

  • ENT examination
  • Use of tuning forks, pneumatic otoscopy and flexible nasoendoscopy
  • Removal of ear nose and throat foreign bodies
  • Management of epistaxis, and assessment and management of vertigo
  • Slit Lamp Refresher
  • Practice of eyelid eversion
  • Measurement of corneal depth and size of lesions using slit lamp
  • Technique for removal of corneal foreign body
  • Assessment of the anterior chamber
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure
  • Testing for relative afferent pupil defect
  • Ocular ultrasound
  • Retinal examination

The workshop for FACEMs will allow CPD procedural skills sign off for ENT and Eyes.

Annual two-day Eye and ENT Emergency Seminar (virtual)

The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital’s two-day Eye and ENT Emergency Seminar is an annual event, occurring in September each year (usually 1st Thursday/Friday). In 2026, the seminar will be held virtually on the mornings of Thursday 3 September and Friday 4 September 2026.

The Hospital is offering the two half day education virtual seminar for FACEMs, Emergency Medicine Trainees, GPs, Nurse Practitioners, rural and remote practitioners wishing to fine tune or refresh their skills:

– Thursday 3 September 2026 (Eye day) – 8am – 1.15pm

– Friday 4 September 2026 (ENT day) – 8am – 1.15pm

The seminar will provide lectures by specialists in the field.

The seminar offers the opportunity for participants to draw upon the expertise of our colleagues in Ophthalmology and ENT surgery as their specialties relate to your practice of Emergency Medicine.

Please note: tickets for this event will be provided through an external provider (Humanitix), and additional booking fees will be charged. The Humanitix booking fees are non-refundable.

Some of the webinar recordings, (not all), will be available after the event for participants to access. A link and password to view the recordings will be available for viewing for one month after the event.

There will also be a Fellowship practice exam (virtually on Friday 2.15pm-4.15pm). If you are interested, please note on your registration, and we will let you know details once confirmed.
