Monday 30 June 2025 marks Dr Sherene Devanesen’s last day as Chair of the Board of Directors, concluding a decade of outstanding contribution to The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

“Since joining the Board in 2015, Sherene has been a steadfast advocate for excellence in governance, patient care and community engagement,” Chief Executive Officer Brendon Gardner said.
“Her tenure has been marked by a deep commitment to advancing the hospital’s mission and ensuring Victorians have access to our world-class specialist care.”
Sherene’s vision, wisdom and unwavering dedication has shaped the future of the Eye and Ear. Her legacy is one of compassion, integrity and impact — qualities that have inspired those who have had the privilege to work alongside her.
“Dr. Sherene Devanesen AM has made an outstanding contribution to the health sector during her decade-long tenure as the board chair at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Her leadership and commitment have significantly advanced the hospital’s mission to provide exceptional specialist health care for all Victorians,” said The Minister for Health the Hon. Mary Anne Thomas MP.

Under Sherene’s leadership, the hospital has:
- Delivered a state-of-the-art redevelopment that will serve generations of Victorians and keep the Eye and Ear at the forefront of research, teaching and clinical care.
- Guided the hospital into the initial steps of the Health Services Reform Plan linking the Eye and Ear into the Parkville LHSN.
- Strengthened our commitment to reconciliation, including the renewal of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan and the celebration of a decade-long partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.
- Navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic with resilience and compassion, ensuring continuity of care and support for staff and patients.
- Celebrated excellence across the organisation, including presenting the hospital’s most prestigious award, the Board Chair’s Medal.
The Eye and Ear hospital would like to thank Sherene for her exceptional service and wish her all the best for the future.
We also welcome our new Board Chair, Ms. Melanie Eagle, who will begin her role on 1 July 2025.
