FAQs – The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital

The following are eligible for free library membership and can join by filling out and signing the Borrower application form below.

·     Employees and Emeritus appointees of the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital: Full library membership. This includes offsite access to online journals, databases and e-books.

·     Employees and Postgraduate research students of the University of Melbourne’s Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and the Centre of Eye Research staff. Partial membership: All services except offsite access to licensed e-content. Letter confirming employment to be furnished to the library.

·    Fellows on short term appointment [Less than 3 months] . Limited library services.

1. Go to the Library website if you’re looking for a journal, e-book, or database.
2. Click on the PUBLICATION FINDER link on the middle of the Library homepage to browse for e-journals, e-books and databases.
3. There is also the POPULAR JOURNALS, E-BOOKS AND DATABASES link on the left navigation column that provides direct links to these e-resources.
Your OpenAthens login is required to enable you to access these e-content, OFFSITE. Onsite access at the Eye & Ear Hospital, does not require logging in.

Your first port of call would be the library website.( Our Library is called the Ronald Lowe Library. The link is located under the HEALTH PROFESSIONAL tab on our hospital homepage ( see Fig. 1) or on the bottom right corner of our INTRANET homepage ( see Fig. 2).

If you’ve located the journal article elsewhere, either through a google search, etc., follow these steps:
- Copy the article Title, then go to our library website homepage and paste it in the DISCOVERY SEARCH box ( FIG.3). Click Submit.
- On the results page, locate your article and check for this full text finder icon below. Click on it and follow the prompts to download your article. If we do not have access to the full text article, you’ll see the link REQUEST AN ARTICLE, BOOK OR AV ( see below). Fill the short form and submit. It will come to me and the article sourced for you on inter-library loan at no cost to you ( for all work-related).

Looking for a journal, e-book or database?-ONSITE: Go to the library website homepage and click on the PUBLICATION FINDER (PF) blue tab ( Fig.3). On the PF page, start typing the journal title, it will bring up suggestions, select the correct one. Under the title, you’ll see a plus sign + ( Fig. 4), click on it to collapse it, note the year range that is available. ( see example in Fig. 5). Then click on the publisher hyperlink and follow the prompts to view articles available. Copy the article Title, then go to our library website homepage and paste it in the DISCOVERY SEARCH box ( FIG.3). Click Submit. On the results page, locate your article and check for this full text finder icon below. Click on it and follow the prompts to download your article. If we do not have access to the full text article, you’ll see the link REQUEST AN ARTICLE, BOOK OR AV ( see below). Fill the short form and submit. It will come to me and the article sourced for you on inter-library loan at no cost to you ( for all work-related).
PubMed provides links to full text articles of Open Access journals [free on the web]. Libraries can also provide links to their licensed e-journal content in PubMed. To enable this to happen, libraries are given a special PubMed web address. For our library, this is the PubMed link that’s on the library homepage. By clicking on this link, you will be able to access full texts of Abstracts that have the Eye & Ear Hospital logo showing on the top right screen. However, full text access will only work within the hospital network. Offsite, you will see our hospital logo, but will not be able to download the full text. In this instance, you will need to go to the Publication Finder (PF) on the Library website homepage, click on it, and search for the journal title in the PF search box. If doing this offiste/remotely, you will be required to login using your OpenAthens login.
There are 3 levels of service delivery:
- Standard – 1 week – $16.50
- Rush – Within 24 hours – $33.00
- Express – 2 hrs – $49.50
**Note: RVEEH Departmental and other RVEEH work-related request-costs, are borne by the Library, so it’s sourced at no cost for you.
BrowZine is available on Eye and Ear Hospital computer desktops. Onsite access does not require authentication.

Getting Started:
1. BrowZine App
Pre-Requisite:

Ensure that you have registered for your OpenAthens account (only available to Eye and Ear employees). You can register here.
1. Download the BrowZine app from your Apple App store, Google Play Store or Amazon App Store, on your device. Its free.
2. Choose the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
3. Login using your OpenAthens credentials. This will enable you to have full access to our Library’s licensed e-journals.
4. You can also setup your personal BrowZine account which will enable you to:
- Create your bookshelves of your favourite journals.
- Save full text articles to your personal Library
- Receive alerts of new journal issues
- Save your article citations to bibliographic software such as EndNote, Mendeley, etc. Our Library does not have institutional subscription to Endnote, but have them available on the Library PCs.
- You can share article CITATIONS on Facebook, Twitter…
SEARCHING FOR YOUR FAVOURITE EYE & ENT JOURNALS: From the Subject List, select MEDICAL SPECIALITIES to view our Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology journals. You can also search by subject..e.g. Type in “Quality” and it will bring up journal titles with that word in it. e.g. “ Quality and Safety in Health Care”, etc.

ACCESS TO EVIDENCE-BASED CONTENT, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE
1. LEAN LIBRARY ( Works best offsite)
The Library has implemented the browser extension Lean Library, which enables easy OFFSITE /REMOTE access , to licensed content from journals, e-books and databases that the Library subscribes to or has access to via other affiliations. Currently, when conducting a Google search, etc. offsite, you’d come across an article abstract ( you’ll need to select it from your search result) , but would need to take a number of steps to locate the full text. With Lean Library, after making your selection from your search result, you’ll see a pop-up to tell you, that our Library has access to the full text, and all you need to do is click on the link on the pop-up to authenticate ( OpenAthens) and download the article right there. How does it work?
- To locate the full text of an article, Lean Library looks for article DOIs ( Digital Object Identifier that uniquely identifies an article) from our subscribed journals or those that we have access to, or from Open Access journals. If the article does not have a DOI, it will not retrieve the full text.
- Currently, Lean Library works on desktop PCs and laptops. For mobile devices/tablets, Lean Library is only available, at the moment, on iOS via the browser app, Academic Browser ( free from Apple store) , which has Lean Library built into the browser. You’ll need to select our Hospital from the drop-down list and click on “SAVE” .
- When conducting your search OFFSITE on the internet, whether via Google, PubMed , or elsewhere, Lean Library will detect if our Library has full text access to the article abstract you’ve retrieved. A pop up will appear to the top right of the screen where you’ll need to login using your OpenAthens login and download the article ( Register for your OpenAthens here if you do not have login. Only for Eye and Ear employees). If the Library does not have access to the full text, Lean Library will automatically check for a legal Open Access version, or it will direct you to the Library’s inter-library loan form.
How do I get started?
- You will need to download Lean Library. Download here. Select the browser that you frequently use. Click on the button ADD TO CHROME, etc. Follow the prompts. You can also install it on more than one browser. Ensure that you have the latest version of your selected browser. For Lean Library to work, you must use the browser that has the Lean Library extension. See below on how to detect that it’s installed.
- Then select our Hospital from the drop-down list ( see attached screenshot) . Save. You’re ready to search! You’ll see the greyed-out Lean Library (LL) logo on the top right corner of your browser screen. This lights up in green when it locates a full text article for you. Click on it to quickly see the drop-down message.
The FAQ for Lean Library will be uploaded on the new Library website, after the Hospital website goes live at the end of the week. In the meantime, please reply to this email if you have any questions. Happy to guide you through it.

Procedure
1. Departmental purchases are those purchases for print textbooks or journals that are to be housed and managed by Departments, but are ordered by the Library, fully processed on receipt and bibliographic record added to the Library Catalogue prior to delivering to the ordering department. Kindly note that the preferable format is the electronic or online version of books and journals, but justified reasons for the print version is accepted.
2. You may request for a quote for the item (s) through the Library. Email: library@eyeandear.org.au
3. On receipt of the quote(s ) from the Library, submit your order through WorkPlace (eProcurement).
4. The library will need to catalogue your books (etc), so please ensure that they are delivered to the Library on receipt.
5. You will also be notified via email when the item (s) is fully processed and is ready for collection.
6. ONLINE orders: Note that the library cannot place online orders as we do not have credit card facilities. [e.g. Amazon.com purchase, etc]. Please contact the Supplies Dept. (Glenda Prewett on Ext. 8607 ) or the Finance Dept. for further advice on online purchases.
